The first day of turf workouts for the upcoming spring meet at Keeneland brought out a contingent of horses from trainer Wesley Ward's barn March 31. Among them were two winners from last fall's Breeders' Cup World Championships at Santa Anita Park: Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (gr. IT) winner Hootenanny and Draftkings Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Sprint (gr. I) winner Judy the Beauty.
Hootenanny, a 3-year-old son of Quality Road who races for Susan Magnier, Michael Tabor, and Derrick Smith, covered five furlongs in 1:02 2/5 around the "dogs" while working in company with Sunset Glow, Ten Broeck Farm's runner-up from the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (gr. IT). Sunset Glow, a 3-year-old Exchange Rate filly, was clocked in 1:02 4/5 with internal fractions for both being :26 and :39 3/5.
Next up was Wes Welker's Undrafted, the third-place finisher in the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint (gr. IT). Working in company with Ken and Sarah Ramsey's homebred Emotional Kitten, the 5-year-old Purim gelding was clocked in 1:04 with fractions of :26 and :40 2/5. Undrafted is scheduled to make his 2015 debut in the April 4 Shakertown (gr. IIIT).
Judy the Beauty worked on her own, covering a leisurely half-mile in :53. The 6-year-old daughter of,Ghostzapper is prepping for her season debut for Ward, who is also her owner.
