We continue our march toward the May 2 this weekend with a trio of top-class Kentucky Derby prep races. The $1-million, Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby at Santa Anita Park is one of the signature events, having produced the winner of the Kentucky Derby two of the last three years in I’ll Have Another (2012) and California Chrome (2014). Get the scoop on each of this year’s Santa Anita Derby contenders below.

Like Bayern, Dortmund shares a name with a German soccer club.

One Lucky Dane established a new career-best Equibase Speed Figure in that race with a 114. Hall of Famer Bob Baffert also trains unbeaten Santa Anita Derby favorite Dortmund.

Prospect Park earned a new career-top Equibase Speed Figure of 109 for the San Felipe, indicating he is getting better at the right time. Prospect Park is a half-sibling (same dam [mother], different sire [father]) to 2004 Santa Anita Oaks winner Silent Sighs and multiple graded stakes winner Proposed.

His name is a not-so-subtle jab at NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez’s ability, or lack thereof, to read defenses.
