Before a sizable group of horses breeze in the coming days for the Nov. 5-6 Breeders' Cup at Del Mar, a handful of pre-entered Breeders' Cup horses notched workouts Oct. 27, including Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) automatic qualifier California Angel .
The California Chrome 2-year-old filly, who earned a "Win and You're In" berth with an upset in the JPMorgan Chase Jessamine Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland, breezed five furlongs in 1:01 at Indiana Grand for trainer George Leonard.
"She worked really well," said Leonard. "Everything went as planned. She will ship out Monday to California."
The Chris Walsh-owned filly, a winner of two of three starts, will be the first Breeders' Cup starter for her owner and trainer.
Other pre-entered horses that worked Wednesday, all covering five furlongs, included Stilleto Boy (:59 4/5 at Santa Anita Park), Grafton Street (:58 2/5 on Woodbine's Tapeta surface), Sequist (1:02 1/5 at Churchill Downs), and Sumter (1:00 1/5 at Santa Anita).
Stilleto Boy is a pre-entrant to the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) and Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), with the Classic first preference. Grafton Street is a Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) pre-entrant, and Sequist is among nine pre-entries for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). Sumter is the final alternate for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) and appears unlikely to gain entrance in an oversubscribed race.
