With the start of the Breeders' Cup just three days away, a handful of hopefuls put in their final morning works Nov. 2 in preparation for the Nov. 5-6 World Championships at Del Mar.
Stilleto Boy , the 30-1 outsider in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1), covered four furlongs in a leisurely :52 1/5 under Hall of Fame jockey Kent Desormeaux. The 3-year-old Shackleford gelding galloped once around the Del Mar track before setting off in his work.
"The first time around at the seven-eighths pole he was looking at all the photographers but the second time, he was all business," Desormeaux said. "It was either going to be :51 or :48 and when I got to the quarter pole, I toned him down a bit. I liked what I felt this morning."
Ed Moger Jr., who trains him for Steve Moger, was happy with the work.
"He didn't need to go quick," Moger said of Stilleto Boy, who had worked a best-of-15 five-furlong drill at Santa Anita Park last week before shipping to Del Mar.
Runner-up to Medina Spirit in the Awesome Again Stakes (G1) in his most recent start, Stilleto Boy was a $420,000 purchase by his owner from Paramount Sales' consignment at the Fasig-Tipton July Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale this summer after winning the Iowa Derby in early July.
Loves Only You , pegged at 4-1 on the morning line for the Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T), worked three furlongs in :38 1/5 on turf.
A trio of candidates zipped three furlongs on the dirt, led by Jasper Great , a 15-1 shot for the TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1), and Marche Lorraine , a 30-1 shot for the Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1). Both were clocked in :35 3/5. Sumter , a 30-1 also-eligible for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T), was timed in :36 2/5.
Pingxiang , 12-1 for the Big Ass Fans Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), went four furlongs in :47 1/5.
