Princess Grace looks to extend a four-race winning streak that started in November of last year in the Nov. 6 Goldikova Stakes Presented by PNC (G2T) at Del Mar.
John and Susan Moore's 4-year-old daughter of Karakontie comes into the one-mile race off a start Sept. 14 at Kentucky Downs where she broke slow but turned on her jets in the stretch and surged to win the Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf Stakes (G3T) by a half-length.
Trained by Michael Stidham, her on-going streak also includes the $200,000 Yellow Ribbon Handicap (G2T) won by a length and a quarter at Del Mar in August, the $200,000 Dr. James Penny Memorial Stakes (G3T) at Parx Racing in July, and the Mrs. Revere Stakes (G2) on Churchill Downs' main track Nov. 14, 2020.
Princess Grace will be piloted in the Goldikova by Kent Desormeaux, who was on board in the Yellow Ribbon. Her record of six wins from seven starts helped make her the 8-5 morning-line favorite. She will break from post 2.
Slim morning-line second-choice in the field at 9-5 is grade 1 winner Going Global , a 3-year-old bay filly by Mehmas , who will break from the seventh post accompanied by accomplished jockey Flavien Prat, who has been her jockey in her six starts this year. Her most recent victories with Prat were the $300,000 Del Mar Oaks (G1T) in August, as well as the $100,000 Honeymoon Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Park in May, and the $100,000 Providencia Stakes (G3T) in April—all three races run at 1 1/8 miles.
Going Global, trained by Phil D'Amato, has a win and a second going a mile this year. She won the China Doll Stakes at Santa Anita back in March and was a close second at the distance July 24 in the San Clemente Stakes (G2T) at Del Mar. The filly is owned by CYBT, Michael Dubb, Saul Gevertz, Michael Nentwig, and Ray Pagano.
In post 1 will be the Heider Family Stables' Zofelle , a 5-year-old filly by Zoffany , who will be ridden by Tyler Gaffalione. She makes her first start on the West Coast since being sent to the U.S. from England in 2019. This year she has won or placed three times out of four starts, which includes a win a mile on the grass at Gulfstream Park in the $125,000 Marshua's River Stakes (G3T). Trained by Brendan Walsh, her only off-the-board finish came in the Longines Just a Game Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park, which was run on turf labeled good. She may relish the return to firm ground.
Trainer Richard Baltas has two entries in the field—longshots Ippodamia's Girl and Bodhicitta —who will break next to each other in posts 5 and 6, respectively. Calvin Nguyen's Bodhicitta won last year's Yellow Ribbon and was fourth in this year's edition.
The Goldikova is the third race on the Breeders' Cup World Championships' Saturday undercard. The race is named after the late champion race mare from Ireland, who won three consecutive editions of the Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) in 2008-10. She was named Cartier champion older mare twice and honored twice by the Eclipse Awards as champion grass mare. She was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2017. The field of nine will race at 11:25 a.m. PT.
