A G Indy wins the Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at Del Mar

R3 Racing's A G Indy  (Take Charge Indy  ) emerged victorious in the $200,000 Senator Ken Maddy Stakes at Del Mar, the most valuable race on the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup undercard. The filly was bred in Kentucky by E. H. Beau Lane.

A G Indy debuted as a 2-year-old in 2019 and faced graded stakes competition in her fourth start as a 2-year-old, finishing seventh in the Jimmy Durante Stakes (G3T) at Del Mar. In her second start against stakes company Nov. 5, the filly bettered a field of turf sprinters that included multiple stakes winners and a $300,000-plus earner. The victory marked A G Indy's third win at Del Mar since Aug. 19—a SoCal turkey.

"When he (jockey Umberto Rispoli) took her home, he found a lane, and he got it done," said her trainer Doug O'Neill, who has been hesitant to rush the filly into stakes competition.

"So, great win by the filly, but also great ride by Umberto," said O'Neill as he hurried from the winner's circle to the paddock to prepare his next starter, Slow Down Andy  (Nyquist  ), who finished second in the Golden State Juvenile Stakes.

A G Indy has finished in the money in all six of her starts in 2021, good for a record of 6-3-1-2 ($207,640) and an overall record of 13-4-4-2 ($267,422). She has a penchant for sprinting on the turf at Del Mar; all three of her wins in 2021 have come at five furlongs over the Del Mar turf.

"I think her current form has been so strong," O'Neill said. "She's been going six furlongs at Santa Anita Park, and five furlongs seemed like it might suit her better. She's run here before well. Umberto has the confidence, and it worked out perfect."

A G Indy paid $15.40 for the win. She won by a neck over Time Limit who was a half-length in front of Hear My Prayer. The five furlongs were run in :56.71.

A G Indy is out of the winning Badge of Silver mare Hong Kong Silver. She is the first of four foals produced by the mare. Her most recent foals are a Midnight Lute   yearling filly and an Omaha Beach   colt foaled April 1.

Little Red Feather Racing purchased A G Indy out of the 2018 Keeneland September Yearling Sale for $105,000 from the breeder's Beau Lane Bloodstock consignment. O'Neill claimed the Take Charge Indy filly for her new connections in a Jan. 3 claiming race at Santa Anita for $35,000. That claim was the second for the filly, who had been originally claimed Oct. 2 last year by Biggleague Racing and trainer Andrew Lerner for $40,000 in a one-mile race at Santa Anita. She is 3-1-1 from five starts for R3 Racing and O'Neill.
