Marche Lorraine (outside) catches Dunbar Road to win the Breeders' Cup Distaff at Del Mar

The Japanese racing community built on what was already a historic Breeders' Cup World Championship by capturing its second victory with 49-1 Marche Lorraine  in the $2 million Longines Breeders' Cup Distaff (G1).

Heavy favorite Letruska got caught up in blistering early fractions set by Private Mission  that led the field through :21.84, :44.97, and 1:09.70. By the second turn, the leaders had faded and a cavalry charge of closers began battling down the stretch. Marche Lorraine in the middle of track had Dunbar Road  to her inside and Malathaat  was running full out on the rail.

March Lorraine prevailed by a mere inches with Malathaat surviving an equally close finish for third. The final time was 1:47.67. This was the first Breeders' Cup victory for top European rider Oisin Murphy.

The winner paid $101.80, $41, and $8.80.

It was the second winner on the day for conditioner Yoshito Yahagi, who also trained Maker's Mark Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (G1T) victress Loves Only You .
