They wasted no time kicking off the action Nov. 10 at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, as Book 1 opened with the $1.4 million sale of the Galileo mare Satin And Silk, offered in foal to 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify on a March cover.
Claiborne Farm, agent, signed the ticket on the 4-year-old mare consigned by Eaton Sales, agent, as Hip 13. Satin And Silk's stakes-winning dam Wildwood Flower (Langfuhr) also produced grade 1 winner Materiality and the grade 2-winning, grade 1-placed My Miss Sophia —the dam of promising Pilgrim Stakes (G2T) winner Annapolis .
"She is for a farm client," said Bernie Sams, stallion seasons and bloodstock manager for Claiborne. "We tried to buy a few mares last night (at The November Sale, Fasig-Tipton's marquee breeding stock sale), but got outbid. We liked her and a couple others for today, so we will see."
My Miss Sophia was a $4 million purchase by agent Steve Young from this sale in 2018 in foal to leading Claiborne sire War Front , and Annapolis was the resulting foal bred by Bass Stables.
"It probably helped," Sams said of the mare's close relation to Annapolis. "My Miss Sophia is at the farm, we know the family, so we will be keeping our fingers crossed. Being in foal to Justify doesn't hurt either. (My Miss Sophia) has a good colt, so we will see what happens."

Bred in Ireland by John D. Gunther, Satin And Silk was a $1,237,289 purchase by M. V. Magnier from the Newsells Park Stud consignment to Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale in 2018. She started six times in Ireland in 2020 but failed to win for trainer Aidan O'Brien and Coolmore partners, and was imported to the U.S. in November of last year.
Satin And Silk was one of three Galileo mares in foal to Justify offered during Wednesday's opening session. Prose, consigned by Hunter Valley Farm, agent, as Hip 210, was snagged by Gary Broad/Walmac Farm for $350,000. Evening Primrose, consigned by Denali Stud as Hip 108, failed to meet her reserve when the hammer fell at $285,000.
Through Nov. 9, Galileo is represented as a broodmare sire by 227 black-type winners, 123 of which are group/graded stakes winners, nine of them champions.
Justify is coming off a strong yearling sales season that saw progeny from his first crop average $354,658, the highest average of any first-crop yearling sire in North America.
