Jack Christopher , one of the top 2-year-olds in the country and a prospect for next year's Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1), had a screw inserted in a left shin last week by orthopedic surgeon Dr. Larry Bramlage, said Bradley Weisbord, racing manager for the colt's co-owner, Jim Bakke.
The Chad Brown-trained 2-year-old, owned by Bakke, Gerald Isbister, Coolmore Stud, and Peter Brant, was scratched the day before the Nov. 5 TVG Breeders' Cup Juvenile Presented by Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance (G1) at Del Mar on the advice of Breeders' Cup veterinarians. He was the morning-line favorite for the 1 1/16-mile race, which Speedway Stables' Corniche took in front-running fashion.
"Due to a couple areas lighting up (on a bone scan), mainly the left shin, he had a procedure done on that shin and he's going to be out for two months," said Weisbord, a bloodstock agent whose clients include Bakke and Isbister. "So we will start him back (training) in early 2022 at WinStar Farm and then ship him to Palm Meadows and start his campaign in South Florida."
Also receiving time off for Brown is Klaravich Stables' Domestic Spending , who was withdrawn from the Nov. 6 Longines Breeders' Cup Turf (G1T). He is out for a minimum of three months while he recovers from a suspensory ligament injury, Brown told Daily Racing Form.
A son of Munnings , Jack Christopher went 2-for-2 this year at age 2, winning his debut at Saratoga Race Course Aug. 28 and adding the Champagne Stakes (G1) Oct. 2 at Belmont Park. He is already rehabbing at WinStar Farm, Weisbord said.
