Description:

Dayatthespa, the Eclipse Award-winning turf female of 2014 and first New York-bred to win a grade I Breeders' Cup race, was named New York-bred Horse of the Year, at the annual awards banquet of the New York Thoroughbred Breeders April 6 at the Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Chester and Mary Broman were named the top breeders in the Empire State.

Dayatthespa, owned in partnership by Jerry Frankel, Ronald Frankel, Steve Laymon, and Bradley Thoroughbreds, was guided through her 5-year-old campaign by trainer Chad Brown. Following a runner-up finish in the De La Rose Stakes in August, she reeled off three straight victories in the Yaddo Stakes at Saratoga, First Lady Stakes (gr. IT) at Keeneland, and the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) at Santa Anita Park.

A daughter of City Zip   bred by Castellare DiCracchiolo Stable, Cracchiolo & Goldsher, Dayatthespa was also voted 2014 champion New York-bred turf female and champion New York-bred older female. Her late dam, M'Lady Doc was named New York-bred Broodmare of the Year.

The Bromans, New York's top breeders also in 2004 and 2011, had a banner year in 2014 even by their standards. Broman-bred horses, most competing in the couple's familiar green and white silks, won 62 races and earned $2.4 million last year. At the conclusion of the 2014 Saratoga meet, the Bromans finished fourth in the owner standings with 11 wins.

Dayatthespa was not the only multiple honoree. Three-year-old Artemis Agrotera, a grade I winner and Eclipse finalist for female sprinter owned and bred by the Bromans was voted champion New York-bred female sprinter and champion New York-bred 3-year-old filly. Antonino Miuccio's Palace, who won back-to-back grade I races at Saratoga, was honored as champion New York-bred male sprinter and older male.

The event, which was sponsored by the New York Breeding and Development Fund, was emceed by former jockey and broadcast analyst Richard Migliore. The 2014 New York-bred divisional champions and Horse of the Year were chosen by a ballot of New York Turf writers, handicappers, chart callers, and racing analysts conducted by NYTB.
