Godolphin's Maxfield remained a perfect 5-for-5 at Churchill Downs and capped his illustrious career in the Nov. 26 Clark Stakes presented by Norton Healthcare (G1).
The Brendan Walsh-trained son of Street Sense perched just off Midnight Bourbon through early splits of :23.83 and :48 before pouncing on his younger rival around the turn past three quarters in 1:11.70. Under regular pilot Jose Ortiz, Maxfield dueled a stubborn Midnight Bourbon down the lane, putting that rival away before outlasting the late rally of Happy Saver by a half-length under the wire. Midnight Bourbon was third.
After clocking the 1 1/8 miles in 1.49.06, Maxfield will join Godolphin's Essential Quality in retirement and take up stallion duties at Darley's Jonabell Farm in Lexington, Ky.
