The 2021-22 racing season kicks off at Oaklawn Park Dec. 3 with the inaugural running of the $150,000 Advent Stakes. The six-furlong main track event drew a field of 10 juveniles eyeing a shot at black-type victory.
The two runners most likely to attract the most attention at the windows are HRH Prince Sultan Bin Mishal Al Saud 's Cairama and David Campbell, Douglas Arnold, Marc Winston, and David Clement's Higher Standard .
Cairama, sold to Narvick International for $525,000 out of Harris Training Center's consignment at this year's Ocala Breeders' Sales March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training after zipping the co-fastest eighth-mile in :9 4/5, graduated first time out for his connections. The Cairo Prince colt forced all the pace and prevailed by a head Sept. 17 Belmont Park. Stretched out to a mile in the Nov. 7 Nashua Stakes (G3), the Steve Asmussen trainee was last of six early and only managed to finish fifth. Cutting back in trip here, he will be piloted by Ricardo Santana Jr. from post 9.
Trained by Tom Amoss, Higher Standard recorded a sparkling debut win Nov. 14 at Churchill Downs, romping by 5 3/4 lengths while earning a 94 Equibase Speed Figure in the mud. Since that effort, the son of Into Mischief breezed a bullet five furlongs in :59 1/5 Nov. 24 at Churchill. Breaking from the far outside post, Higher Standard secures the services of Florent Geroux for the Advent.
Other interesting contenders of note are Charter Oak and Kavod , both making their first start for new barns since being claimed for $50,000 in their previous efforts, as well as last out Churchill maiden special weight winner B Sudd for trainer Dallas Stewart.
