Hot Rod Charlie , the gutsy 3-year-old colt who was a force along the Triple Crown trail and throughout the season, has been named winner of the 2021 Secretariat Vox Populi Award, it was announced Dec. 11.

Created by Secretariat's owner Penny Chenery, the award annually recognizes the horse whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the general public each year, gaining recognition for Thoroughbred racing.

Emerging as the favorite among thousands of fans who voted in a year-end online poll, the son of Oxbow   started the season as a longshot but consistently showed speed and determination that carried him through a fourth-place finish in the Longines Breeders' Cup Classic (G1).

Hot Rod Charlie, who is eyeing a season finale in the Dec. 26 San Antonio Stakes (G2) before a bid at the Dubai World Cup (G1) at Meydan in March of 2022, is owned in a partnership with Boat Racing, Gainesway Stable, Roadrunner Racing, and Bill Strauss. Trained by Doug O'Neill, he was a surprise winner of the Twinspires.com Louisiana Derby (G2) and finished third in the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1). He went on to run second to Essential Quality   in the Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1), where his blistering fractions in the first quarter-mile rivaled the record-setting pace set in 1973 by Secretariat. Later in the year, Hot Rod Charlie followed a disqualification in the TVG.com Haskell Stakes (G1) with a score in the Pennsylvania Derby (G1), his first grade 1 win.
