The $100,000 H. Allen Jerkens Stakes tops a 10-race card on Christmas Eve at Gulfstream Park. In the Dec. 24 feature, a field of of nine contenders line up for the grueling two-mile turf test.
Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Alex Daigneault's Abaan makes his stakes debut for trainer Todd Pletcher while tackling four well-tried Mike Maker trainees.
A late bloomer, Abaan broke his maiden in his sixth try at Saratoga Race Course in September, wiring the field in a 7 1/2 length demolition. In his first start against winners, the son of Will Take Charge was second by a half-length routing 1 1/2 miles in an allowance race at Belmont Park. Most recently, the gelding registered a decisive front-running victory in a 1 3/8-mile allowance at Aqueduct Racetrack, earning himself a 99 Equibase Speed Figure.
Luis Saez has the call on Abaan from post 3.
Maker has multiple graded stakes-placed Ajourneytofreedom , multiple stakes-placed stakes winner Bluegrass Parkway , Keeneland allowance victor Malthael , and recent Aqueduct allowance runner-up Jarreau entered in the H. Allen Jerkens.
Paradise Farms Corp. and David Staudacher's Ajourneytofreedom tops the Maker contingent. The 4-year-old son of Hard Spun has been a consistent player in longer turf races and looks for a bit of class relief here as he steps down from graded stakes company. He was a solid fourth in the $1,000,000 Calumet Turf Cup (G2T) at Kentucky Downs two starts back.
Paco Lopez has the call from post 4.
