Omega Perfume scored a remarkable "four-peat" in the Tokyo Daishoten (G1) Dec. 29 at Oi Racecourse but the striking gray was all out to get the job done.
The 2,000-meter (about 1 1/4 miles) Daishoten is one of Japan's top dirt races, run at the popular Tokyo metro track. Omega Perfume, a 6-year-old son of Swept Overboard , has owned the event, winning annually since 2018.
In the 2021 edition, jockey Mirco Demuro had his hands full. Most of the 15 runners bunched up into a tight group heading to the final turn with Omega Perfume on the outside. As the stretch beckoned, Omega Perfume was floated very wide, out to the middle of the track while still shy of the early speed.
Grinding away, Omega Perfume finally got by a persistent Clincher in the final strides, winning by a half-length. Westerlund was third.
Omega Perfume, reportedly set to retire to stud, has spent his entire career on the dirt, switching between tracks administered by the Japan Racing Association and those run by local authorities, including Oi. He now has 10 wins from 23 starts with five of the victories coming at Oi. In three JRA grade 1 events, he was never better than fifth.
Trained by Shugo Yasuda, Omega Perfume was bred by Shadai Farm. He is out of the Gold Allure mare Omega Fragrance.
