After finishing second as the overwhelming favorite in her season debut, champion Untapable bounced back with a dominant victory in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Stakes on Friday at Oaklawn Park.
The 4-year-old Tapit filly seized command on the turn of the 1 1/16-mile race, opened up a clear advantage in the stretch and rolled to a 2 ½-length runaway.
Among the fillies left in her wake was Gold Medal Dancer, who got the better of Untapable in the Grade 2 Azeri Stakes on March 14 but finished 2 1/2 lengths back while third in the Apple Blossom.
Untapable capped a six-win season in 2014 with a victory in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff, which was her fourth Grade 1 win of the year and cemented her Eclipse Award as champion 3-year-old filly.
Trained by Steve Asmussen for owner-breeder Winchell Thoroughreds, Untapable completed the Apple Blossom in 1:42.96 under John Velazquez to improve to nine wins in 13 career starts. The $360,000 winner’s share boosted her career earnings to $3,416,725. She returned $2.40 for a $2 win ticket as the heavy 1-to-5 favorite.
