With Lexington and the surrounding areas fast in the grip of a winter storm that resulted in treacherous road conditions Jan. 6, Keeneland has postponed the ship-in date for horses cataloged to the Keeneland January Horses of All Ages Sale—and officials are monitoring the situation to determine whether the sale itself needs to be delayed.
"With the winter storm and terrible road conditions in Central Kentucky, along with transportation and vanning cancelations, ship in of horses for the 2022 January Sale will be delayed until Saturday, Jan. 8," read a statement issued by the Lexington track's auction arm late Thursday. "We will continue to monitor weather and travel conditions to determine whether the January Sale start date needs to be delayed a day as well."
Slated for Jan. 10-13, the January Sale has 1,516 horses—broodmares and broodmare prospects, short yearlings, and horses of racing age, along with stallions and stallion prospects—cataloged to four sessions. That original catalog number does not include supplements.
Temperatures in Central Kentucky are forecast to plunge to a low of nine degrees overnight Thursday, with a low of 10 degrees and a high of 21 degrees expected Friday. While temperatures improve markedly Saturday, with a high of 43 degrees and a low of 39 degrees, significant rainfall is expected Saturday night.
