Golden Glider wins an allowance optional claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs

Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse already has one exciting 3-year-old in Pappacap , the points leader on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. And he seems to have another sophomore colt with the potential stakes talent in Golden Glider .

At Tampa Bay Downs Jan. 7, Golden Glider improved to 2-for-2 with a first-level allowance optional claiming score going a mile and 40 yards. Last of five early after a slow start, the 9-10 favorite wrested command with a four-wide rally on the second turn and won by 1 3/4 lengths over Boitano  after idling down the stretch.

The $25,000 race, the second on the card, lost some of its quality when 4-5 morning-line favorite Emmanuel  was scratched.

The winner, a Conrad Farms-owned son of Ghostzapper  , was timed in 1:41.24 under Antonio Gallardo. Splits over a fast surface were :24.09, :48.48, and 1:13.12, set by Boitano.

Bred in Kentucky by Nursery Place and Dicken Equine, Golden Glider was a $395,000 weanling purchase from the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale from the Nursery Place consignment by bloodstock agent Justin Casse, the trainer's brother. The colt is one of four winners from five foals out of the Orientate  mare Golden Scarf , led by Glamanation , a stakes winner at Woodbine.

Golden Glider's prior start also came at Woodbine, where he rallied from 12th to win a route maiden race on debut on Tapeta Nov. 27.

Tampa's upcoming Road to the Kentucky Derby preps are the Sam F. Davis Stakes (G3) Feb. 12 and the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (G2) March 12.
