Winter weather forced the cancelation of weekend racing at multiple tracks across the country Jan. 28.
The New York Racing Association canceled their Jan. 29 live program at Aqueduct Racetrack due to a powerful winter storm forecast to impact the New York City metropolitan area.
A National Weather Service winter storm warning goes into effect for the downstate region at 7:00 p.m. ET Friday and continues through 7:00 p.m. Saturday. The NWS forecast, which aligns with NYRA's independent weather services, is calling for 8-12 inches of snow along with sustained high winds with gusts exceeding 45 mph. These conditions will produce dangerously low wind chill values on Saturday. As a result, NYRA has canceled Saturday's card in the interest of the safety of all participants. The $150,000 Toboggan Stakes (G3) will be rescheduled for Feb. 5.
A decision regarding opening Aqueduct Racetrack for simulcasting will be made on Saturday morning.
Live racing at Aqueduct will resume Jan. 30 with a nine-race card featuring the $100,000 Jimmy Winkfield. First post is 12:20 p.m. ET.
In Kentucky, Turfway Park called off its Friday card due to a forecasted 8 degree wind chill and weather factors, but still planned to race Jan. 29 with a first post of 6:15 p.m. ET.
Due to the low temperatures and high winds forecast to move through the area Saturday, Charles Town's live racing program scheduled for that evening was postponed to Feb. 2. The card will be moved in its entirety to Wednesday, with the first racing kicking off at the West Virginia track's standard post time of 7 p.m. ET.
Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course has also canceled racing for Jan. 29 due to extreme sub-zero wind chill. Live racing is scheduled to resume Monday, Jan. 31.
