Get Smokin wins the 2021 Tampa Bay Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs

Tampa Bay Downs' "Turf Champions Day" will have a pair of talented turf runners to headline their two 1 1/16-mile stakes Feb. 5. Defending winner Get Smokin  returns in the $175,000 Tampa Bay Stakes (G3T) for older horses, while grade 1 winner Lady Speightspeare  makes her Tampa debut in the $175,000 Endeavour Stakes (G3T) for older fillies and mares.

Ironhorse Racing Stable, BlackRidge Stables, T-N-T Equine Holdings, and Saratoga Seven Racing Partners' Get Smokin will be making his first start since June, when he was fifth in the Poker Stakes (G3T) at Belmont Park. Previously trained by Tom Bush for the Mary Abeel Sullivan Revocable Trust, Get Smokin also won the 2021 Seek Again Stakes at Belmont and the year before captured the Hill Prince Stakes (G2T) there. The front-running Get Stormy   gelding is now trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse.

South Florida-based trainer Chad Brown will be sending two horses for the Tampa Bay Stakes: Madaket Stables, Wonder Stables, and Robert LaPenta's 5-year-old gelding L'Imperator  and Michael Dubb, Sanford Goldfarb, and Samuel Abraham's 8-year-old gelding Devamani . The latter is also making his first start since June when he captured the Monmouth Stakes (G3T) at Monmouth Park.

Trainer Arnaud Delacour will saddle last year's Tampa Bay Stakes runner-up Eons  as well as last year's fourth-place finisher Talk Or Listen .

The field also includes the Calumet Farm-owned and -bred stakes winners Cellist  and English Bee  and Jan. 8 Tropical Turf Stakes (G3T) winner Clear Vision .

The Tampa Bay drew a full field of 12, along with one also-eligible.

Brown, who is bidding for his first Tampa Bay Stakes trophy, has two entrants in search of his fourth Endeavour victory. Both of his 4-year-old fillies, Bleecker Street  and In Italian , are owned by Peter Brant. Bleecker Street is a perfect 3-for-3 and will be contesting her first stakes race, and In Italian is 2-for-3 while also making her stakes debut.

They could have their hands full with Charles Fipke's 4-year-old Lady Speightspeare, who is 4-for-5 for trainer Roger Attfield, including the 2020 Natalma Stakes (G1T) at Woodbine. Most recently she was third in the Dec. 26 Tropical Park Oaks at Gulfstream Park. 

Trainer Graham Motion will bid for his third Endeavour victory with Gainesway Stable's 4-year-old Oyster Box , who was third in last year's Florida Oaks (G3T) at Tampa.

Ten fillies and mares make up the field for the Endeavour.
