LNJ Foxwoods' graded stakes winner Subconscious will shorten back up to a mile for his 4-year-old debut in the $100,000 Thunder Road Stakes (G3T), the first race at Santa Anita Park Feb. 5.
The 4-year-old gelding won the Oct. 31 Twilight Derby (G2T) in his first try at stakes level, stalking the pace before getting up for a 1 1/4-length victory at 1 1/8 miles. Back in the Nov. 27 Hollywood Derby (G1T) going the same distance, he flattened late after sitting off the pace to finish fifth.
"(Subconcious is) training very well,” trainer Richard Mandella said of Subconcious. “He was a little flat in the Hollywood Derby, like he’d had one too many races, so I just gave him a little extra time."
Subconscious most recently turned in a five-furlong move in :59 4/5 on Santa Anita's main track Jan. 30. He will break from the rail with Juan Hernandez up in the six-horse field.
The gelding has won or placed in five of seven starts and has earnings of $227,820.
Agave Racing Stable and Sam-Son Farm's 2020 Seabiscuit Handicap (G2T) Count Again missed the winner's circle in five starts last season. He finished a close third in the Frank E. Kilroe Mile (G1T) last March but has not run since August.
Last out starter optional claiming winner Sniper Kitten , Delaware , Ready Soul , and former group 3-placed French runner Hurricane Cloud complete the field.
