Smile Happy wins the 2021 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs
With the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) 12 weeks away, the pari-mutuel field of "All Other 3-Year-Olds" closed as the 2-1 favorite in Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager and Smile Happy was the 8-1 second betting choice.
Smile Happy, the 3 1/4-length winner of the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes (G2) at Churchill Downs in November, also closed as the 8-1 individual favorite in Pools 1 and 2 of the KDFW in November and January. He is entered in the Feb. 19 Risen Star Stakes Presented by Lamarque Ford (G2) at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Other horses that garnered attention from bettors include Feb. 12 Sam F. Like in Pools 1 and 2, the KDFW pools assume that horses under the care of trainers suspended from competing in the 2022 Kentucky Derby will not be under consideration. No horses currently trained by Bob Baffert, suspended from competition at Churchill Downs Inc.-owned tracks through mid-2023, are therefore among the individual betting interests. Those horses are included in the "All Other 3-Year-Olds" pari-mutuel field.
Total handle for the Feb. 11-13 KDFW pool—the third of five scheduled wagering pools in advance of the 148th running of the $3 million Kentucky Derby on May 7—was $328,461 ($235,012 in the Win pool and $93,448 in Exactas).
Dates for the remaining 2022 Kentucky Derby future pools are March 11-13 (Pool 4) and March 31-April 2 (Pool 5). The lone Longines Kentucky Oaks Future Wager will coincide with Pool 4 of the KDFW on March 11-13.
