Calumet Farm's Keen Ice , winner of the Travers Stakes (G1), runner up in the Belmont Stakes Presented by DraftKings (G1), and earner of more than $3.4 million, notched his first stakes winner from his first crop of 3-year-olds in Bold Leader Feb. 13.
Bred in Kentucky by Scott and Debbie Pierce, the 3-year-old colt is the second stakes winner for the stakes-placed Hook and Ladder mare Lenders Way . The Sonata Stable-owned Bold Leader won his first start after leaving the States in the Clasico Jorge Washington Stakes (recognized as a grade 3 in Puerto Rico), going 1 1/16 miles on the dirt at Camarero Race Track after switching trainers to Jose Velez. He led after the quarter pole and drove the win home, winning by 2 3/4 lengths over Midnight Thunder with a final time of 1:45.90 on a muddy track.
Bold Leader was sold for $125,000 by Garrencasey Sales at the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale to the Keen Ice Group and then was sold as a yearling at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Fall Yearling Sale by Hunter Valley Farm for $100,000 to Marc Tacher.
The colt made five starts with trainer Michael Trombetta, getting his first win in his second start and placing second two other times before being sent to Puerto Rico.
Keen Ice, by Curlin , stands for an advertised fee of $7,500.
