Per Capita gets his first win going a mile in 2020 at Churchill Downs

Per Capita , a winning full brother to graded stakes winners Anchor Down   and Iron Fist , has been retired and will become the first son of Tapit   to stand in Arizona.

The 6-year-old horse out of grade 3 winner Successful Outlook (Orientate) is owned in partnership by Alvarez Racing Stables and Fleming Thoroughbred Farm near Willcox, Ariz. Per Capita will stand at Fleming for an introductory fee of $2,000 with a live foal, stands and nurses guarantee.

Bred by Gainesway in Kentucky, Per Capita is also a half brother to grade 1 winner Sweet Lulu  and his second dam is group 1-placed winner Catch a Glimpse. He was initially raced by Gainesway and Peter Brant and later with Red Oak Stable, which bought into the horse after he was offered at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July Horses of Racing Age Sale and sold for $325,000.

Per Capita raced four times with trainer Chad Brown, getting his first win and placing twice, before being transferred to trainer Todd Pletcher after Red Oak joined the ownership group. Pletcher also got a win and two placings with the horse that raced exclusively on dirt at Belmont Park, Saratoga Race Course, Gulfstream Park, Churchill Downs, and Aqueduct Racetrack over distances from seven to nine furlongs. He compiled a 2-2-2 record from eight starts and earned $134,140. He posted his career-best Equibase Speed Figure of 105 in an $84,000 allowance optional claiming race at Aqueduct, where he got brushed 70 yards from the wire and just missed winning by a slim nose.

"We are excited to offer a horse from one of the strongest Gainesway families to breeders in Arizona," said Dylon Alvarez, who together with his father Freddy founded the racing stable in June 2019 and quickly expanded into the breeding business. "We will strongly support Per Capita with our broodmare band and plan to privately acquire a few more mares specifically to complement his pedigree."

"Through recent legislation, the incentives for Arizona's breeders have improved significantly; a new stallion like Per Capita will further grow the market," said Marvin Fleming, who manages Fleming Thoroughbred Farm.

Also new for the 2022 stallion roster is stakes winner and multiple black-type-placed Arizona Moon  (Macho Uno —Phoenician Moon, by Malibu Moon), who is owned by John Campo III. Fleming Thoroughbred Farm also stands Lotsa Mischief  (Into Mischief  ), Ez Effort  (In Excess ), and Distorted Reality  (Distorted Humor ).
