For the first time since last fall, the Road to the Kentucky Derby series returns to Kentucky the evening of March 5 when Turfway Park hosts the $125,000 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes. 

Foremost among the 12 entrants and two also-eligibles is Tiz the Bomb , runner-up in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf (G1T) at Del Mar. Other notable 3-year-olds in the 1 1/16-mile race on Tapeta include Rich Strike , Stolen Base , On Thin Ice , Erase , and Bloodline . 

The Battaglia is a qualifier for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Woodford Reserve (G1) at Churchill Downs, offering points on a 10-4-2-1 scale to its top four finishers. Saturday's Fasig-Tipton Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2), Gotham Stakes (G3), and San Felipe Stakes (G2) award points on a 50-20-10-5 basis.

The Battaglia further serves as the final local stakes steppingstone toward the $600,000 Jeff Ruby Steaks (G3) at Turfway April 2.

Tiz the Bomb (Hit It a Bomb  ) finished seventh in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) in his season debut Feb. 5 at Gulfstream Park, after which trainer Kenny McPeek indicated the colt would be pointed for the Jeff Ruby and considered for overseas turf races. He runs Saturday for Sherri McPeek's Magdalena Racing after previously racing for the beleaguered ownership group Phoenix Thoroughbreds.

Immediately after the Battaglia Saturday night, Turfway hosts a minor qualifier for the Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1), the $125,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at a mile for 3-year-old fillies.
