Maryland Horse Breeder, Vet Dr. Fred Lewis Dies at 95

Maryland horse breeder and veterinarian Dr. Fred Lewis died March 13.

Lewis and his wife, Mary Agnes, who he was married to for 80 years until her passing in 2020, bred and raced horses out of their farm in Clarksville, Md. Racing under the name Lewis Family Racing Stable, their runners collected $1,204,734 in earnings between 2003 and 2022.

The Lewises' highest earner, Katie's Love, was one they actually purchased out of the 2003 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Eastern Fall Yearling Sale. Purchased for $60,000 out of the Bill Reightler consignment, Katie's Love, a Maryland-bred daughter of Not For Love, went on to win the 2007 Shine Again Stakes at Pimlico Race Course and bankrolled nearly $250,000.

Katie's Love's daughter Celtic Katie (Posse), bred by the Lewises, also became a stakes winner, capturing the 2014 Geisha Stakes at Pimlico.

The Lewises also bred and raced the Scipion gelding Who Stole My Sock, who landed the Maryland Million Starter Handicap in 2016.

A former WWII veteran, Lewis is survived by his 10 children, 17 grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
