Wesley Ward's millionaire Bound for Nowhere fired fresh off the bench March 19, winning a $49,000 allowance/optional claiming event over the lawn at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots.
Acing his first start since August of 2021 with a 1 1/4-length win going 5 1/2 furlongs in New Orleans, the 8-year-old son of The Factor set himself up for a run at the May 6 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Presented by Sysco (G2T) at Churchill Downs, Ward told BloodHorse.
Bound for Nowhere is a two-time winner of the Shakertown Stakes (G2T) at Keeneland, including the 2021 edition, but Ward has multiple grade 1 winner Golden Pal targeting that spot for his season debut.
With John Velazquez in the irons Saturday, Bound for Nowhere led seven rivals through early splits of :23.07 and :47.78 with Gray Attempt pressing the pace. He was set down at the three-sixteenths pole and inched away from that rival, then held sway over the rail rally of Excess Magic . Gray Attempt finished a neck back in third. The final time was 1:05.24 on a course rated firm.
Bound for Nowhere improved his record to 8-2-3 from 18 starts, with earnings of $1,085,257. He was bred in Kentucky by Wayne, Gray, and Bryan Lyster out of the Alydeed mare Fancy Deed, and graduated from the 2015 Keeneland September Yearling Sale when purchased for $310,000 by Cromwell Bloodstock from Ashview Farm's consignment.
