Matareya breaks her maiden at Ellis Park

Since a sparkling debut victory last August, Godolphin's Matareya  has always been a promising gem in trainer Brad Cox's treasure chest full of stars.

“We have always thought highly of her,” Cox told Keeneland media before a fifth place finish in last year's Darley Alciabades (G1).

The Pioneerof the Nile filly was then a willing runner-up in the Fern Creek Stakes at Churchill Downs before taking on the mighty Secret Oath  in an Oaklawn Park allowance contest in her first time stretching out to a mile. A distant second behind Secret Oath, Matareya was reverted back to sprint distances in her sophomore debut, airing a Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots second-level allowance event by 5 1/4 lengths in frontunning fashion.

Sticking to one-turn races, Matereya will get her chance to vindicate the lofty opinions of her connections in the $400,000 Beaumont Stakes presented by Keeneland Select (G3) April 10. The dirt race is over the unique Beard Course of seven furlongs and 184 feet. 

Flavien Prat rides the filly, who breezed five furlongs in 1:00 1/5 April 3 at Churchill.

The field of seven also includes Paradise Farms and David Staudacher's Lady Scarlet , fresh off a dominating score in the March 19 Cicada Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack, and Peter Brant's recent Tampa Bay Downs debut winner Gina Romantica , a $1.025 million Keeneland September Sale acquisition.
