The battle for first-season sire honors is underway and a big result for one of the freshmen at the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale would be a timely boost. Here we pick out some lots to watch by first-season sires at Park Paddocks April 12-13.
Lot 71
Expert Eye - Spotlight , by Dr Fong
B. Colt
Consigned by: Shanaville Stables
Breeders' Cup Mile (G1T) winner and Banstead Manor Stud stallion Expert Eye already has the promising placed Coraje to his name and this colt catches the eye with a page full of black-type winners and performers.
Consigned by Shanaville Stables, the March-born colt is out of the grade 2-winning Dr Fong mare Spotlight, who is already the dam of six winners including John Guest Racing Bengough Stakes (G3) winner Projection . Her once-raced Shirocco daughter has in turn produced listed winner and Pertemps St. Leger (G1) runner-up Berkshire Rocco , Moyglare Stud Stakes (G1) third Sunset Shiraz , and Italian group 3 winner Elisa Again .
Under the second dam, the Prix de la Nonette-Japan Racing Association (G3) winner Dust Dancer , are the likes of Keeneland Phoenix Stakes (G1) winner and group 1-winning sire Zoffany , Galileo Irish E.B.F. Futurity Stakes (G2) scorer and Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1) second Rostropovich , and Jebel Ali Racecourse & Stables Anglesey Stakes (G3) winner Wilshire Boulevard .
He made 27,000gns ($38,542) when selling from New England Stud at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale.
Lot 102
Cracksman - Anne of Kiev , by Oasis Dream
B. Colt
Consigned by: Lynn Lodge Stud
A son of dual Champion Stakes hero and world champion Cracksman, Lynn Lodge Stud's colt is out of the speedy Oasis Dream mare Anne of Kiev, winner of the Betfred the Bonus King Cecil Frail Stakes and Sportingbet Supports Heros Hever Sprint Stakes for trainer Jeremy Gask.
Anne of Kiev has produced four winners from five runners, including Australian group 2 scorer Yonkers and Anneli, the dam of Jebel Ali Racecourse and Stables Anglesey Stakes (G3) third Hadman .
There is quality further back in the page too, with Great Voltigeur Stakes (G2) winner and Jefferson Smurfit Memorial Irish St. Leger (G1) third Sacrament, Audi Pretty Polly Stakes (G1) winner Chorist , and Aky Bet Yorkshire Cup (G2) scorer Gospel Choir all featuring under the third dam, the Ballymacoll Stud Stakes winner and Yorkshire Oaks (G1) runner-up Blessed Event .
Lot 113
Tasleet - Chrissycross, by Cape Cross
B. Colt
Consigned by: Star Bloodstock
An 80,000gns ($114,148) purchase as a yearling when selling to Byron Rogers at Tattersalls Book 2, this son of Shadwell's high-class sprinter Tasleet looks an interesting proposition, not least because he is a half brother to last season's Weatherbys Ireland Greenlands Stakes (G2) winner Gustavus Weston .
The pair are out of the winning Cape Cross mare Chrissycross, who hails from the family of the listed winner, and Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes (G1) third Badminton, while further down the page are 14 Hands Winery Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) winner Caledonia Road and grade 2 winner and Santa Anita Oaks (G1) second Kumari Continent .
Lot 115
Sioux Nation - Cirencester, by Sea The Stars
B. Filly
Consigned by: Dolmen Bloodstock
Sioux Nation, the red-hot favorite for first-season sire honors, is already off the mark courtesy of Ocean Quest and an eyecatching sales result would further boost the profile of the group 1-winning son of Scat Daddy .
Dolmen Bloodstock's filly is one of five lots on offer by Coolmore's sire and has a page filled with high-class performers. She is a half sister to Italian listed-placed performer Beautiful Black and their dam Cirencester is a granddaughter of the grade 3-placed Nausicaa , the dam of seven winners including Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Cherry Hinton Stakes (G2) winner Memory , herself the dam of group/graded scorers Call To Mind , Learn By Heart , and Recorder .
The April-born filly was a 22,000gns ($31,559) purchase from Hillwood Stud at Tattersalls Book 3.
Lot 121
Zoustar - Cordial, by Oasis Dream
B. Filly
Consigned by: Gaybrook Lodge Stud
A daughter of Tweenhills' excellent Zoustar, Gaybrook Lodge Stud's filly should prove a hit given she is out of a daughter of Mirabilis and has a page which could be subject to some updates courtesy of last season's Silver Tankard Stakes second Westover .
Cordial was a dual winner herself, having sold from Juddmonte to Stuart Williams for 25,000gns ($42,809) at the 2014 Tattersalls February Mixed Sale, and is the dam of two winners in Passional and Libertine Belle.
Under Cordial's dam Mirabilis is Darley Club Stakes (G3) and Wolferton Stakes winner Monarchs Glen , while under the third dam is Prix de Diane Hermes-French Oaks (G1) heroine Nebraska Tornado and Prix Eugene Adam (G2) winner Burning Sun.
