Dissident Retires in Style With All Aged Win

Description:
Dissident and Wandjina finished a respective one-two in what looked to be a match race from the start in the All Aged Stakes (Aus-I) April 18 at Royal Randwick.

A multiple group I winner, Dissident got the best of his 3-year-old rival at the finish line, however, winning by a half head in his final career start.

At the turn, Terravista and Shooting To Win made an effort to catch the leading pair, and favorite Chautauqua joined the fray in the stretch. Dissident and Wandjina drew away, and Wandjina got his head in front, but Dissident battled back to catch him. Wandjina narrowly gained back before Dissident lunged right on the line for Jim Cassidy.

Chautauqua got close late, finishing a long neck in third.

The time for 1,400 meters (about seven furlongs) was 1:24.60 on soft turf. The final group I event of the Sydney autumn carnival, capped a group I double on the day for trainer Peter Moody, who two races earlier on the card won the Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (Aus-I) with Pasadena Girl

A 4-year-old son of Sebring, Dissident won his fifth group I race and fourth at the top level of the 2014-15 season, after victories in the New Zealand Bloodstock Memsie Stakes in August, Makybe Diva Stakes in September, and C. F. Orr Stakes (Aus-I) in February. He has a 7-5-3 record from 21 starts that also include the 2014 Royal Randwick Guineas (Aus-I).

"I've had the pleasure of retiring three group 1 winners at the top—Typhoon Tracy, Black Caviar, and Dissident. The first two were Horse of the Year winners," Moody told the Sydney Morning Herald. "This bloke has put his hand up to be number three.

"He is just such a great fighter and doesn't give in. That showed what a great horse he is there. He was there for all them to run down and they couldn't do it.

"He will go and be a stallion and hopefully be just as good at that."

Dissident was bred by Widden Stud Australia from the stakes-placed Anabaa mare Diana's Secret. He is campaigned in a large partnership that also includes Newgate Farm, China Horse Club, Segenhoe Thoroughbreds Australia, and Kia-Ora Stud.

Moody purchased Dissident from Widden Stud for Aus$210,000 at the 2012 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale.
