Kazmike wins the New York Stallion Stakes Times Square Division at Aqueduct Racetrack

Peter Kazamias, owner of New York-bred Kazmike , knew his horse would have a big day at the $200,000 New York Stallion Stakes Times Square Division at Aqueduct Racetrack. All Kazmike had to do was keep his shoes on. He did, and besides briefly trailing by a head, Kazmike won and broke his maiden in 1:18.70 on the 6 1/2-furlong main track sprint for eligible New York-sired sophomores April 23.

Trained by Dimitrios Synnefias, the son of Bank Heist  entered off a pair of runner-up efforts sprinting six furlongs against state-bred maidens at Aqueduct, including a troubled trip last out on March 31.

"He lost a shoe last time, so we knew he was going to run big," Kazamias said. "I told (jockey Trevor McCarthy) to go to the front. Speed is holding up today. The 2 horse (Barese ) is a closer but speed is holding, so we went to the lead. McCarthy gave him an excellent ride."

Sent to post at odds of 9-1, Kazmike broke to the front from the outermost post 7 as Barese broke inward and a step slow from post 2, brushing briefly with Unique Unions  to his inside. Kazmike marked the opening quarter-mile in :22.61 seconds over the fast main track under pressure from Mister Larry  and Unique Unions, who quickly regained position after the break.

Barese hustled into fourth position down the backstretch as Unique Unions was angled off the rail and to the outside of Mister Larry with Kazmike leading through a half-mile in :46.38. Unique Unions loomed large through the turn as Barese tried in vain to catch up with a wide rally as Kazmike continued to lead the fray.

Unique Unions put a head in front at the stretch call, but Kazmike persevered to the wire to notch the 1 1/4-length win. It was a further 5 1/4 lengths back to Barese in third. Mo Dancin , Red D G P , Tommy Gun,  and Mister Larry rounded out the order of finish.

Unanimous Consert Overpowers Woodhaven Foes

One race later on Saturday, Unanimous Consent  remained perfect for owner Klaravich Stables with an off-the-pace victory in the $100,000 Woodhaven Stakes for 3-year-olds going 1 1/16 miles over the inner turf in 1:42.95.

Trained by Chad Brown, the son of Almanzor  earned his first stakes victory by 1 3/4 lengths with a well-timed ride by Manny Franco.

Unanimous Consent pulls away late in the Woodhaven Stakes

Unanimous Consent broke from post 5 and was content to sit behind the pace set by Chanceux , who rushed up to take command from Maseta  as the field of six passed the wire for the first time and entered the first turn through an opening quarter-mile in :24.22. Franco settled Unanimous Consent in fifth along the rail with the order unchanged through a half-mile in :49.53 over the firm turf.

Maseta and Fort Washington  came under a ride on an outside path approaching the final turn as Chanceux began to tire. Franco got to work aboard his charge, making up ground steadily through the turn before launching a menacing bid down the center of the racetrack and flying to the front just past the eighth pole.

Fort Washington reached the wire next, a nose the better of Chanceux with the late-running Ohtwoohthreefive  completing the superfecta 1 3/4 lengths back. Heaven Street  and Maseta rounded out the order of finish. Doctor Jeff  was scratched.
