In what appears to be a wide-open contest among 11 fillies and mares going one mile on turf, trainer Leonard Powell’s Keyflower rates a big chance as she shortens up a quarter of a mile May 1 in the $100,000 Wilshire Stakes (G3T) at Santa Anita Park.
An impressive one-mile turf allowance winner in her U.S. debut Feb. 19, Keyflower was off a bit slow and rank early in the March 26 Santa Ana Stakes (G3T) while routing 1 1/4 miles, but in a big effort she was in contention turning for home prior to flattening out a bit late while running fifth, beaten by only 2 1/4 lengths.
A stakes winner in her native France, the 4-year-old Kheleyf mare races for the duo of Team Valor International and Gary Barber and will be ridden back by Abel Cedillo.
The John Shirreffs-trained England's Rose is another one cutting back in trip after a disappointing sixth-place finish going 1 1/8 miles in the Jan. 1 Robert J. Frankel Stakes (G3T). The English Channel mare was a stakes winner last October over the Santa Anita turf course.
Setting the pace on Sunday will be Godolphin's homebred Javanica , The multiple graded stakes-placed filly led in the April 9 Royal Heroine Stakes (G3T) at a mile before being overtaken by Going Global late and finishing second by 1 3/4 lengths.
