Devious Dame breaks her maiden at Churchill Downs

In the second race May 5 at Churchill Downs, John C. Oxley's juvenile filly, Devious Dame , became a winner at first asking and the first winner for freshman sire Girvin  . The Florda-bred filly scored by 5 1/2 lengths for trainer Norm Casse among five other fillies in the maiden special weight going five furlongs on the dirt.

Dueling early while angling two-wide on the far turn, the filly took command near the eighth pole under a steady drive from jockey Joe Talamo to hit the wire in :58.09.

The filly is out of the unraced Quality Road   mare The Shady Lady and was bred by Ocala Stud, Joseph M. O'Farrell III, David O'Farrell, et al. She was consigned by her breeder to the 2022 Ocala Breeders' Sales' March Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training, selling for $240,000 to One Up Bloodstock.

Devious Dame is the third filly out of The Shady Lady, who has produced two other winners from her three starters; she has yearling and weanling colts, both by Awesome Slew  . Devious Dame hails from the female family of grade 1 winners Pretty Discreet, Discreet Cat, and Discreetly Mine.
