Description:

It turns out Mike Smith's intuition was right.

The Hall of Fame jockey likely saved multiple grade I winner Shared Belief from further injury by pulling him up in the Charles Town Classic (gr. II) April 18, as diagnostic work performed in the following days revealed a non-displaced fracture at the point of the gelding's right hip.

The injury was mentioned on Twitter April 20 by co-owner Jim Rome, the sports media personality who campaigns Shared Belief through his Jungle Racing along with Jason Litt, Alex Solis II, George Todaro, KMN Racing, and Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer.

Shared Belief, the champion 2-year-old male of 2013 and a winner of 10 from 12 starts, including his past three straight in graded stakes, was making his first start outside of California in the Charles Town Classic in West Virginia. He was eased by Smith after running less than six furlongs in the 1 1/8-mile test.

LAMARRA: Shared Belief Eased as Moreno Wins CT Classic

Bred in Kentucky by Pam and Martin Wygod out of the Storm Cat mare Common Hope, Shared Belief has earnings of $2,932,200. In his start before the Charles Town Classic, the son of Candy Ride   beat race winner Moreno by 4 1/4 lengths when winning the March 7 Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I). One start prior, he put away Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old of 2014 California Chrome by 1 1/2 lengths in the Feb. 7 San Antonio Invitational Stakes (gr. II). Heading into the Charles Town Classic he shared a place atop the Longines World's Best Racehorse Rankings with Queen's Silver Jubilee Cup (HK-I) winner Able Friend.
