The second day of the under tack show went off under favorable weather at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale in Timonium, Md., May 18, with one 2-year-old stopping the clock in :09 4/5 to be the fastest recorded time at an eighth of a mile this week and one youngster turning in a quick quarter-mile in :21 2/5, both times coming from the first set to hit the dirt this morning just after 8:00 a.m. ET.
A New York-bred filly from Chester and Mary Broman, consigned as Hip 385 by Sequel Bloodstock, agent, turned in the day's fastest eighth-mile after he breezed lights out going in :09 4/5. The dark bay colt named Berning Remarks is by the late Bernardini and out of the winning Medaglia d'Oro mare G Note—a producer of four other foals, three of which are winners.
G Note is a half sister to multiple stakes winner Mineralogist , by Mineshaft , and to the stakes-placed Risk a Chance , by A.P. Indy. Risk a Chance is the dam of this year's Rebel Stakes (G2) winner Un Ojo , who was recently withdrawn from this year's Preakness Stakes (G1). Their dam Seeking the Ante , by Seeking the Gold, won the 2005 Nassau County Breeders' Cup Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park and was twice placed in other grade 2 events in New York. The family goes back to the millionaire grade 1 earner Antespend , who later produced the 2004 Florida Derby (G1)-winning sire Friends Lake .
This will be the first trip through the sales ring for Berning Remarks.
A colt from the second crop of Airdrie Stud's American Freedom , consigned as Hip 236 by CM Thoroughbreds, agent, recorded the fastest quarter-mile of :21 2/5 Wednesday. The Kentucky-bred colt was purchased for $12,000 by Anna Munoz and Adela Munoz at the Ocala Breeders' Sales October Yearling Sale from Summerfield last year.
Out of the winning mare Bringingdown Babel, by Roman Ruler , she is a half sister to stakes winner Short Round and to stakes-placed Cat Striker. Their dam Cacophony produced the winning Grandestofall, the dam of Bradester , winner of the 2016 Stephen Foster Handicap (G1), with earnings of $1,196,332 in 26 efforts.
The final day of the under tack show begins tomorrow, May 19, at 8:00 a.m. ET with Hips 421 - 634 set to breeze. The sale begins May 23 at 11:00 a.m. and will continue through May 24 with 636 horses cataloged to sell. As of Wednesday afternoon, 89 horses have been withdrawn from the sale.
