In a sport where pace makes the race, trainer Chad Brown liked what he saw as his filly, Technical Analysis , cruised along on the lead in the $150,000 Gallorette Stakes (G3T).

One by one the splits flashed on the toteboard: :24 1/5, :48 2/5, 1:12 1/5.

"In dealing with the heat (in the 90s) and such you figured the turf would be firm, so to get away in :48 and change (:48.54) for this caliber of filly, those were very generous fractions," Brown said.

In a field of six in which she was the lone graded stakes winner, Klaravich Stables' Technical Analysis lived up to her class edge and 3-5 odds as she cantered along on the front end before pulling away in the stretch to post a decisive 3 1/4-length victory over second choice Crystal Cliffs  in the 1 1/16-mile turf stakes on the May 21 Preakness Stakes (G1) undercard at Pimlico Race Course.

"She was able to take control of the race," Brown said, "and I was relieved to see her respond. She got tested by a pretty good filly (Crystal Cliffs) turning for home who made her move early to test her."

Technical Analysis soars clear in the Gallorette

A grade 2 and grade 3 winner last year, the daughter of Kingman  started 2022 with a second in the April 16 Plenty of Grace Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack, which came six months after she closed out her 3-year-old campaign with a distant second to stablemate Shantisara  in the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup Stakes Presented by Dixiana (G1T).

"I was interested to see how she would respond after her first race of the year where she had a little bit of a wide trip and got beat," Brown said. "It was a good, solid race but the second race off the layoff will usually tell the story for me where we're headed and I think we're headed somewhere good."

Technical Analysis ($3.20) covered the 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.40 under Jose Ortiz while winning for the fifth time in nine career starts and pushing her career earnings to $508,200.

Madaket Stables, Michael Dubb, and Wonder Stables' Crystal Cliff, a daughter of Canford Cliffs  coming off a win in the Sands Springs Stakes for trainer Graham Motion, was second. Three lengths back in third was Stuart Janney III's In a Hurry , a 5-year-old Blame   mare trained by Shug McGaughey.

Technical Analysis was bred by Rabbah Bloodstock Limited and bought for the equivalent of $258,110 from the New England Stud consignment at the 2019 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. She is the first of three foals and the lone winner from the Sea the Stars  mare Sealife , whose most recent offspring is a 2-year-old Pivotal  filly.

Though Brown was uncertain of Technical Analysis' next start, she seems destined to land in a top-level stakes at some point in the near future.

"We think enough of her to shoot for grade 1s," Brown said.
