Before 3-year-old males grab the spotlight at Penn National Race Course the evening of June 3 in the $400,000 Penn Mile (G3T), six sophomore fillies compete in open company in the $150,000 Penn Oaks.
The compact field is led by the Chad Brown-trained duo of Haughty and Customer List , both of whom will make their season debuts in the one-mile grass event.
Haughty (Empire Maker ) raced three times last year for owners Bradley Thoroughbreds, Belmar Racing and Breeding, Tim and Anna Cambron, and Team Hanley, crossing the wire first in her Sept. 17 debut at Belmont Park, only to be demoted to third for stretch interference. She returned a month later to officially capture a maiden race by open lengths at Keeneland.
Wheeled back to compete in the Nov. 5 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (G1T) at Del Mar, she finished a close third.
Klaravich Stables' Customer List (Wootton Bassett ) made just a single start in 2021, overcoming a slow start to win on debut at Monmouth Park last September.
The two principal threats to the Brown pair are European import Belacqua and stakes-winning Alittleloveandluck .
Besides the Penn Mile and Penn Oaks, there are four other stakes Friday at Penn National, all for Pennsylvania-bred runners. In perhaps the strongest of the state-bred stakes, You Must Chill and Buy Land and See vie in the $100,000 With Anticipation Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile turf test for older males.
