Dismissed at 20-1 odds in the $179,500 Shawnee Stakes against a graded-quality field June 4 at Churchill Downs, Oklahoma-bred She's All Wolfe proved she is still a mare with bite.
Surging outside down the stretch under Francisco Arrieta, she rallied from last to defeat frontrunning Ava's Grace , Army Wife , and heavily favored Pauline's Pearl . In a race in which the public expected last-out winner La Troienne Stakes Presented by Signify Health (G1) to win—She's All Wolfe prevailed by a 1 1/4 lengths, returning $42.40 to win in the five-horse field.
"She's run good all year. We've been trying to get that open stakes win for her, and thank goodness, it happened today," trainer Donnie Von Hemel said. "Pauline's Pearl—we were a little apprehensive about her being in there but thought like she could compete with the rest of them. She just ran a super race today."
Arrieta agreed, noting that his mount finished well in the second half of the race after she encountered traffic into the first of two turns.
"I got in trouble. I almost clipped heels. I had to take a little back," he said.
Ava's Grace, who drifted out while tiring down the stretch, held second by three-quarters of a length over Army Wife, who made her first start of the year in the Shawnee. Pauline's Pearl ran a flat fourth, beaten 2 1/2 lengths for the win, well clear of Temper Time in fifth.
She's All Wolfe, a 5-year-old daughter of Magna Graduate , completed 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:43.34 following moderate fractions of :23.49, :47.56, and 1:11.85 set by Ava's Grace. The victory improved the winner to 8-for-25 and elevated her earnings to $595,411 for owner/breeder Robert Zoellner.
She's All Wolfe, previously a stakes winner in Oklahoma-bred company and graded stakes-placed, scored her most significant win in the Shawnee. In her prior start she finished fifth, beaten more than 10 lengths, in the May 6 La Troienne.
The Shawnee serves as a local prep for the $350,000 Fleur de Lis Stakes (G2) at Churchill July 2.
She's All Wolfe's dam, She's All In (Include ), ran third in the 2013 Fleur de Lis during a graded-winning career in which she made $1,102,489 for Zoeller and Von Hemel. She is the dam of five foals, with She's All Wolfe her sole winner. The dam's youngest produce is a yearling filly by More Than Ready .
