Celebrity chef and renowned restaurateur Bobby Flay has acquired an interest in leading Belmont Stakes Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) contender We the People , an impressive 10 1/4-length winner of the Peter Pan Stakes (G3) in his most recent start.
Flay joins the ownership group that includes WinStar Farm, CMNWLTH, and Siena Farm, and he is hopeful that the expanded partnership can create another winning recipe for the third jewel in America's Triple Crown. He bought into Creator ahead of the 2016 Belmont and celebrated a close win over Destin with partner WinStar Farm. Creator came into the Belmont with a win in the Arkansas Derby (G1) ahead of an unplaced finish in the Kentucky Derby (G1).
"I'm thrilled to join the We the People team," said Flay. "I have been an admirer of this colt since he started his career at the beginning of this year. I want to thank Lisa and Kenny Troutt of WinStar for giving me this exciting opportunity. Winning the 2016 Belmont with Creator will be a moment that me and my family will never forget."
WinStar president, CEO, and racing manager Elliott Walden said, "We appreciate Bobby wanting to partner with us again. He is great for the business and a great partner."
Trained by Rodolphe Brisset, We the People overpowered his rivals under Flavien Prat in winning the Peter Pan as he geared down inside the final 70 yards. The 3-year-old colt by WinStar stallion Constitution is produced from the Tiznow mare Letchworth, a half sister to graded stakes winner Stratford Hill and stakes winner and graded stakes-placed Armistice Day . This is also the family of multiple graded stakes winners and millionaires Harmony Lodge and Arkansas Derby (G1) winners Graeme Hall and Magnum Moon .
Bred in Kentucky by Henley Farms, We the People has three wins from four starts this year. He broke his maiden at Oaklawn Park in his career debut in February when he won by 5 3/4 lengths. He then rolled on into a $106,000 allowance race at Oaklawn that he took by five lengths. The colt went unplaced in the Arkansas Derby but regrouped for the Peter Pan in which he won in near gate to wire fashion and earned a 101 Equibase Speed Figure for his performance. We the People turned in his final work June 4 ahead of the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes, breezing four furlongs in :47.59. His work was the ninth-fastest out of 66 at the same distance that day.
WinStar bought We the People for $230,000 at Fasig-Tipton's 2021 The Gulfstream Sale, where Eddie Woods consigned the colt. We the People has apparently been an impressive individual since he was a foal, having sold for $110,000 to Machmer Hall as a weanling out of Taylor Made Sales Agency's consignment at the 2019 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale and later as a yearling during the Keeneland September Yearling Sale where Bradley Thoroughbreds bought him from Machmer Hall for $220,000.
