Lucky Guess Becomes First Winner for Sharp Azteca

Sharp Azteca at Three Chimneys Farm

Three Chimneys Farm's freshman sire and grade 1 winner Sharp Azteca   sired his first winner when his son Lucky Guess  won his racing debut May 27 in 4 1/2-furlong maiden special weight at Hipódromo de las Américas in Mexico City.

Bred in Maryland by Charles and Cynthia McGinnes, Lucky Guess is raced by Cuadra Corasa and trained by Israel Kain Gutierrez Martinez. The final time was :54 1/5.

Santa Lucia Farm bought Lucky Guess for $7,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Yearling Sale from consignor Marshall Silverman. The colt is the second winner produced by stakes-placed Topazio , a daughter of More Than Ready  , who the McGinnes' bought in the name of their Thornmar Farm for $60,000 at the 2015 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Winter Mixed Sale. Hidden Brook consigned the mare who was in foal to Afleet Alex. Topazio has a yearling colt by Irish War Cry   named Distant Drums and produced a filly by Golden Lad   this year.

Sharp Azteca, a 9-year-old son of Freud  , won or placed in nine graded stakes, including a victory in the Cigar Mile Handicap Presented by NYRA Bets (G1) and runner-up finishes in the Las Vegas Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile (G1), Mohegan Sun Metropolitan Handicap (G1), and Malibu Stakes (G1). He retired with an 8-5-1 record from 17 starts and earned $2,406,740.
