Todd Pletcher said April 24 that Cheyenne Stables and Mac Nichol's Madefromlucky officially had been removed from consideration for the Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) May 2 at Churchill Downs.
The official announcement was expected after the trainer said Friday morning, and Blood-Horse.com reported, that he would recommend to the owners that Madefromlucky be removed from Derby consideration and be pointed to the May 9 Peter Pan Stakes (gr. II) at Belmont Park. Friday evening Pletcher confirmed that the owners had agreed, and the son of Lookin at Lucky would not be entered in the Derby.
That decision officially gives Donegal Racing's Keen Ice a spot in the Derby field as the son of Curlin now ranks 20th in the Road to the Kentucky Derby points standings among horses being considered for the classic. Blood-Horse reported that Kent Desormeaux is lined up to ride.
Pletcher’s recommendation followed a poor workout by Madefromlucky Friday morning at Churchill. He and jockey John Velazquez, who was aboard for the work, said Madefromlucky didn’t handle the surface well, especially on the turns.
