Under leading rider Kazushi Kimura, Frosted Over stalked the early pace set by two-time Canadian Horse of the Year Mighty Heart through fractions of :24.45 and :49.44.
As the seven-horse field made their way into the final turn, Kimura gave Frosted Over his cue, and the son of Frosted responded with an impressive turn of foot, collaring Mighty Heart past six furlongs in 1:13.26 and then quickly skipping clear to the wire.
Race favorite Artie's Storm , riding a three-race win streak coming into the Dominion Day, bested Mighty Heart, who won last year's race, by a half-length for second. Special Forces rounded out the top four.
Frosted Over completed the 1 1/8 miles in 1:49.46 on the Tapeta main track.
Primo Touch and Avoman were scratched.
"Today, when he got outside (post), I wasn't going to do anything special," said Kimura. "He was able to stay close easily, just beside Mighty Heart. I just asked him from the three-eighths, and he just nailed it."
Trained by Hall of Famer Mark Casse, the 4-year-old colt came into the Dominion Day off a runner-up finish to Artie's Storm in the May 29 Stella Artois Eclipse Stakes (G2). Canada's champion 3-year-old male in 2021 after a dominating score in the Ontario Derby (G3) and second in the Valedictory Stakes (G3), Frosted Over earned his first win of 2022 in the Dominion Day.
With the victory, the ultra-consistent bay, bred in Kentucky by G. Watts Humphrey, now has four wins, two seconds, and a third from 10 career starts and earnings of $273,325.
"Last time was a smaller field and easier for the behind runners," said Kimura. "My horse just always stayed close and was comfortable. That's a good thing for him."
Frosted Over returned $8.20, $4.00, and $2.40.
Justin Casse scooped up the colt for $275,000 at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky Select Yearling Sale out of the Lane's End consignment. Frosted Over is the first foal out of the Candy Ride mare Candy Crush, the dam of two winners from three foals to race. She hails from the family of seven black-type performers, including grade 3 winner English Affair. Candy Crush delivered a filly by Connect this year.
