Citing extreme heat, Horseshoe Indianapolis canceled racing July 5, according to a social media post from Rachel McLaughlin, the track's racing analyst and production manager.

"We tried to wait out the heat, consulted the horsemen, IHRC and jockeys—the decision was made for the safety of our athletes to cancel," she tweeted.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a heat advisory in the area lasting until 9 p.m. ET. The temperature at Indianapolis International Airport was 97 degrees at 2 p.m.

The track's card had been scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m.
