Trainers Brad Cox and Steve Asmussen have captured five of the last nine runnings of the Prairie Meadows Cornhusker Handicap (G3), with Cox taking it in 2021 with Knicks Go in the midst of his Horse-of-the-Year campaign.
The two trainers again figure prominently in this year's $300,000 race July 9, with Cox starting Twin Creeks Racing Stables' Warrant , the 2-1 morning-line favorite, and Asmussen having the second favorite at 5-2 in Ed and Susie Orr's Silver Prospector . Four horses not trained by them—Flash of Mischief , Officiating , Rated R Superstar , and Fleetridge —complete the lineup for the 1 1/8-mile race.
Warrant finished second in the Brooklyn Stakes (G2) at Belmont Park June 11, and Silver Prospector took the Steve Sexton Mile (G3) at Lone Star Park May 30.
While Silver Prospector (Declaration of War ) stretches out Saturday evening, Warrant (Constitution ) cuts back in distance after running 1 1/2 miles in the Brooklyn. Both horses are winners at 1 1/8 miles. Neither has raced at Prairie Meadows.
Cox is a three-time Cornhusker winner, also taking the race in 2020 with Night Ops and in 2014 with Carve . Asmussen's Cornhusker victories came with Iron Fist in 2017 and Prayer for Relief in 2013.
Seeking to rebound from a couple of lackluster efforts is Danny Caldwell's 9-year-old late-running Rated R Superstar , a $1.6 million earner trained by Federico Villafranco.
