The Indiana Horse Racing Commission has summarily suspended owner/trainer Marvin Johnson and veterinarian Dr. Cynthia Loomis for "actions not in the best interests of racing and which compromise the integrity of operations at a racetrack."
Johnson confirmed in multiple news reports the suspension is related to Loomis possibly treating one of his horses July 4 at Horseshoe Indianapolis, the same day it was slated to run. He said he will cooperate fully with any investigation.
Johnson told the Daily Racing Form, "I wasn't there when all that happened. I don't know if the horse was treated or not."
Rulings posted July 6 to the Association of Racing Commissioners International website indicated the suspensions began Monday. While under suspension, Johnson and Loomis are denied access to properties under IHRC jurisdiction and Johnson cannot race.
Three horses already entered by Johnson—Onward , Tuffer Than Tuff , and Binge —were scratched Wednesday.
Summarily suspended individuals are entitled to a hearing upon written request, the rulings indicated, and "the sole issue is whether the licensee's license should remain suspended pending a final disciplinary proceeding and order."
Deena Pitman, executive director of the IHRC, wrote in a late Wednesday email that "to date, neither licensee has made such a (hearing) request." She cited an ongoing investigation for not being able to provide more details regarding the circumstances that led to the suspensions.
Through Wednesday, Johnson is first in earnings and tied for second by Thoroughbred wins at the track.
