First-crop sire Ransom the Moon was represented by his first winner July 10 when Linmac Farms' Highland Life posted a 1 1/4-length victory in a maiden optional claiming race at Woodbine.
Trained by David Cotey, the colt previously raced once, finishing last of eight in his June 12 debut. Away as the longest shot in the board Sunday at 11-1, the Ontario-bred colt edged clear around the bend and held sway during the stretch under Skye Chernetz. He was clocked in :58.77 for the five furlongs on the all-weather surface.
Bred by James and Janeane Everatt and Arika Meeuse, Highland Life is the first winner produced from the Discreet Cat mare Death by Chocolate, herself a half sister to graded-stakes winner Evil Minister.
Highland Life was acquired by Linmac Farms for $6,058 as a yearling at the 2021 Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society Winter Mixed Sale when offered by Shannondoe Farm.
Ransom the Moon was an outstanding sprinter, taking back-to-back editions (2017-2018) of the Bing Crosby Stakes (G1) at Santa Anita Park. The son of Malibu Moon , a Sam-Son Farm homebred, retired in 2018 with a record of 6-7-2 from 25 starts and earnings of $884,829. He stood the 2022 season at Calumet Farm in Lexington, K.y., for a fee of $7,500.
