Onesto gets up late to win the Grand Prix de Paris at ParisLongchamp

Onesto , winner of the Prix Greffulhe (G2) and fifth in the Qatar Prix du Jockey Club (G1) already this season, added a first group 1 to his CV July 14 at ParisLongchamp when collaring his rivals late to win the Grand Prix de Paris (G1) in dramatic fashion.

Given a hold-up ride by Stephane Pasquier, the Fabrice Chappet-trained colt showed a devastating turn of foot to come from last to first and reel in the four-timer seeking Simca Mille  by a neck at the finish.

Onesto was a first French-trained winner of the race since 2017 and he is now given a 16-1 chance with Coral for the Oct. 2 Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (G1).

Pasquier said: "I wanted to keep him covered up for a bit longer but I could see that Theo (Bachelot on Simca Mille) had set sail for home and I didn't want to leave myself too much to do.

"I'm happy because (Onesto)'s got a real turn of foot and he knows how to use it. I'm delighted for Fabrice who has always been there for me."

Chappet added: "He was a bit keen early on but he showed his good turn of foot. He came from nowhere in the Prix du Jockey Club and he was a very good winner before that in the Prix Greffulhe.

"The pedigree suggested he would stay but he's got plenty of speed as well; he'll win 10-furlong races going forward. It's a good prep (for the Arc), isn't it?"

Prix du Jockey Club second El Bodegon , trained by James Ferguson, was first off the bridle but finished the closest of the British challenge in third, with Queen's Vase (G2) winner Eldar Eldarov  losing his unbeaten record in fourth.

Piz Badile , second in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby (G1), finished last of the six-runner field.

Onesto, a 3-year-old son of leading sire Frankel , runs for the colors of Jpj Dubois. He improved his record to 3-1-0 from six starts and earnings of £386,216 (US$459,516).

Bred in Ireland by Diamond Creek Farm, Onesto is out of the unraced Sea The Stars  mare Onshore. Onesto passed through the sales ring twice, first bringing $250,084 as a yearling at the 2020 Tattersalls October Yearling Book 1 Sale to Mike Akers from the Glenvale Stud consignment before being sent to the United States, where he was consigned by Wavertree Stables at the 2021 Ocala Breeders' Sales Spring Sale of 2-Year-Olds in Training. Hubert Guy Bloodstock signed the ticket on the colt for $535,000.
