Coming into the July 24 Wickerr Stakes at 31-1 did not discourage Irideo and jockey Hector Berrios.
The $300,000, one-mile race for 3-year-olds and up at Del Mar provided a different challenge: not falling behind too many of the 11 competitors and staying within striking distance.
After getting out to a quick start, the 6-year-old son of Easing Along just as quickly found himself in 10th place, 4 1/2 lengths off the pace at the half-mile mark.
Moving in fractions of :23.37, :48.05, and 1:12.51, Berrios took his ride between Gregorian Chant and Bran at the stretch, shooting up from seventh to first to take the win in 1:35.50.
Gregorian Chant was second and Bran was third. Kentucky Pharoah rounded out the top four with 2019 Eclipse Award Champion 2-year-old colt Storm the Court finishing sixth.
Trained by Marcelo Polanco, Irideo paid $65.00 on a $2 win ticket and improved his record to 5-2-0 from 10 starts. His earnings increased to $113,544.
Owned and bred by Pozo de Luna in Argentina, Irideo is out of the multiple graded stakes-winning Footstepsinthesand mare Infiltrada , who is a winner of the 2013 Joaquin S. de Anchorena Internacional (G1) at San Isidro. The dam has two winners out of three foals to start. She also has a 2-year-old Suggestive Boy filly named Isla Bella.
