Stonestreet Stables' Twilight Gleaming , scratched from the July 15 Coronation Cup at Saratoga Race Course, returns in the entries July 29 at Del Mar, facing older fillies and mares for the first time in the $100,000 Daisycutter Handicap.
The race is not her first trip to the West Coast. Last fall, the National Defense filly took the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint (G2T) at Del Mar over the Daisycutter's five-furlong distance on turf.
This year she has a second and a win in two starts in Kentucky, losing by three-quarters of a length in her 3-year-old bow in the April 10 Palisades Stakes at Keeneland before narrowly taking the May 14 Mamzelle Overnight Stakes at Churchill Downs.
Trainer Wesley Ward then entered her in the Coronation Cup but said he scratched her after she developed inflammation from her exercise rider overtightening her girth.
Friday, she must deal with the speedy 5-year-old Leggs Galore , a graded stakes winner who cuts back in trip and company after fading to fifth behind Regal Glory in the Longines Just a Game Stakes (G1T) at Belmont Park June 11. Just a Game runner-up Wakanaka and third-place In Italian won graded stakes in their next starts.
Leggs Galore, a gray daughter of Bayern trained by Phil D'Amato, races for owner/breeder William Sims. She is the 124 top weight, while Twilight Gleaming carries 121.
