It is still a long way to go until Saratoga Race Course gets to the $300,000 Hopeful Stakes (G1) Sept. 5, but Chad Brown is keeping a keen eye on the closing day stakes for 2-year-olds.
As well he should. Brown's Blazing Sevens was an impressive 6 1/4-length maiden winner July 24. The son of Good Magic , who Brown also trained, is owned by John and Carla Capek's Rodeo Creek Racing.
"The most likely thing would be to run him in the Hopeful, which would be my top choice," Brown said outside his Oklahoma Training Track barn July 27. "I need to see the horse train a bunch. My thoughts would be it (Hopeful) makes sense and let's leave it at that."
Brown knows there are more maiden races to come and he expects there will be some impressive performances. He was happy with how Blazing Sevens started his career and how bright the future could be.
Blazing Sevens' win came at six furlongs, a distance Brown said he will never run again.
"I think he is really a two-turn horse," Brown said. "He is, in no way, the favorite for the Hopeful, at least not right now he isn't. There is a lot more racing to go. Let's just see how he trains."
